What is a unit of electricity?
A unit of electricity represents the consumption of one kilowatt-hour (kWh) of electrical energy. For example, a 1000-watt appliance consumes one unit in one hour.
In Pakistan, the per unit electricity price for household customers usually does not exceed 62 rupees. The per unit industrial electricity price in Pakistan does not exceed 65 rupees.
The per unit electricity price varies for household customers, industrial customers and commercial customers. It differs in Lahore, Islamabad and Punjab.

Factors affecting electricity prices
- Fuel Price Adjustment (FPA): Linked to the cost of imported fuel.
- Subsidies: For lower income households.

- Time of Use (TOU): Higher prices during peak hours (6:00 PM to 10:00 PM).
- Region: Prices may vary slightly between different distribution utility companies (DISCOs) such as K-Electric, LESCO, etc.

Electricity Prices per Unit in Pakistan
Electricity bills in Pakistan are based on the so-called “slab” system. This means that the price per unit varies depending on the number of units consumed. Example:
For units from 51 to 100 units, the prices are slightly higher, 12 to 14 PKR.
For units from 101 to 300 units, the prices can go up to 16 to 18 PKR per unit.
Over 300 units: The prices per unit can be high, from 24 to 30 PKR or even more.

What is peak hours?
Peak hours are specific periods when the unit price is higher than the actual price.1 unit electricity price in pakistan
This additional peak hour bill only applies to customers with a three-phase connection. This does not apply to customers with a single-phase connection.
Peak hours last for four hours and occur at different times of the day depending on the season.

How do you calculate your electricity bill?
Add to that the additional costs such as electricity charges, taxes, surcharges and peak hours. Let’s assume a household with a consumption of 300 units, out of which 50 are peak hours. Here’s how to calculate the bill:
- Base charge: 250 units × 30 rupees/unit = 7,500 rupees
- Electricity charge: No change in fuel prices, therefore = 0 rupees
Taxes and surcharges: 20% of the total base charge and electricity charges, totaling 1,500 rupees.
Peak hours: These are calculated separately, depending on the current peak hour charge and the number of units consumed. The total is 450.54 rupees.
Adding all this together gives you your bill, which in this case is 9,450.54 rupees.

There are two ways to reduce your electricity bill: You can opt for solar panels and reduce your electricity bill to almost zero.

There are several factors, including fuel costs, various government subsidies, higher unit prices during peak hours, inefficient transmission and distribution (depending on the quality of the cables),
