The USGS first said the earthquake was magnitude 8.0, but later changed it to 8.8. After the main quake, there were several strong aftershocks, including one that was magnitude 6.9.

“The shaking started gently but got stronger and stronger. My building is quite flimsy and light, which might be why it didn’t fall apart. But it really felt like the walls could give way at any second.
The shaking went on continuously for at least three minutes.”
Governor Labels Earthquake “The Strongest in Decades”

Sergei Lebedev, Kamchatka’s regional minister for emergency situations, confirmed that tsunami waves as high as 3 to 4 meters (10 to 13 feet) were recorded in some coastal areas. People were immediately told to move away from the shoreline.
Japan Orders Coastal Evacuations

Fukushima Nuclear Plant Evacuated as a Precaution

Hawaii Orders Coastal Evacuations
Authorities in Hawaii started moving people out of areas that could be affected. The Honolulu Department of Emergency Management posted a warning on X (formerly Twitter):
“Act now! Dangerous tsunami waves are expected. Move to higher ground or the upper floors of a strong building right away.”
